Love the idea of a disco ball dance party! No basement, so maybe in the living room. Why not?

When we're young, it's so easy to "have fun" by going out with friends (and, at least in my case, drinking too much.) I've also struggled to figure out what "fun" means for me now. I've settled on the idea that if I'm enjoying myself, no matter what I"m doing--cooking dinner, gardening, having coffee with a friend--that counts as "fun." It doesn't have to be scheduled as a specific "fun activity."

I hear you, Pam. I think for me, I want to find things to do where I get lost in them. I agree, cooking can be fun, so can having coffee with a friend-- and I'll continue to enjoy those things. But I'm also looking to add elements of novelty to my fun activities. :)

I loved reading this. It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot. I was determined that my forties would be fun but then wasn’t sure what that meant. Dancing is a lot of fun. Going on holiday is fun. But, like you say, I think it’s more about the micro- moments, finding fun in the everyday.

I'm so glad it resonated, Liz. I hear you. I recently turned 44 and reflected on a lot that day. Ultimately I realized that while I have a lot of joy in my life, there is a lack of real fun. I'm planning to sit with this and come up with a plan. :)

A plan sounds like a great idea. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

I love that you're unpacking this, Nicole! I especially appreciate you challenging the idea that fun needs to include spending money + alcohol. It invites us to think more deeply about how to cultivate playfulness, connection and flow, the three areas you highlight.

😊 yeah, I think as an introvert I have seen things like reading and writing as fun. But when I reflect on that, it's more a mix of contentment and joy, rather than fun. I want to laugh more, feel rebellious, be silly... And that is going to require me to find my way to the center of that venn diagram.

That makes so much sense and I love that you're differentiating between joy/contentment and fun too.
